Have you checked your mattress lately? If you haven’t, now is the time to do so.
Many people use their mattress warranty to determine when it’s time to replace it. However, what you should know is that the comfort ingredients, on top of your spring core, wear out much sooner and this is what causes poor sleep and restless nights.
Here are the signs to determine if you need a new mattress:
- Your mattress is older than 8 years
The age of the mattress is one of the first things to consider. Most people don’t remember the last time they bought a mattress. You should know that the warranty is for specific parts (springs) and workmanship, not the overall comfort of the mattress. Most mattresses will need to be replaced after 7-10 years. Even if you think you’re a good sleeper, there’s a chance you’ve just slowly gotten used to a less than stellar sleep experience.
- When you wake up, you don’t feel rested
If you get a good night’s sleep, you should wake up refreshed and rested. If you find that you wake up tired and feel sleepy during the day (and don’t suffer from other sleep disorders), it may be due to tossing and turning throughout the night. Your body is working overtime to find a comfortable sleeping position that no longer exists.
- Wake up with back pain
If you wake up with more pain than you had when you went to sleep, your mattress is probably the culprit. Due to the gradual degradation and softening of the mattress material, it loses its ability to provide crucial support to sensitive areas such as the neck, lower back and hips. This can create significant pain in those areas. So, if you wake up feeling beaten and not refreshed, chances are you need a new mattress or you’re sleeping on a mattress that’s the wrong firmness for your body.
- It is more comfortable for you to sleep on other beds
If you prefer the couch to your bedroom bed, or if you find that you sleep better on a hotel mattress, this is a pretty good indicator that you should consider buying a new mattress. Your mattress should be comfortable. Lack of sleep is often the result of discomfort. Studies show that by simply replacing your old mattress, you can improve the quality and quantity of your sleep.
- Allergies
Over time, most types of mattresses can accumulate allergens such as mold, dust mites and dust. If you notice that you sneeze when you get close to bed or wake up every morning with watery eyes and a runny nose, the cause could be allergens in the mattress. When choosing a new mattress, consider the hypoallergenic materials our mattresses are made of.
